Security Gates and Fire Escape

Security that cannot be opened from inside can trap people in a fire. A good installation keeps your family and staff able to get out.

The simple rules

  • Every gate and set of bars must be openable from inside without special effort
  • Keep the key where everyone in the house can reach it, not in a locked drawer
  • Make sure at least one escape route from each bedroom stays usable
  • Practise it, so children and visitors know where the key is

Retractable windows and doors help because they fold aside. For passages to bedrooms, see retractable security doors and their key and lock options and passage and night gates for bedrooms.

Business premises

Shops, offices and schools may have building and fire rules that apply to doors and gates on escape routes. Ask your local municipality or fire department what applies to your premises before you order.
